As Kikuji sees in a brand new year we also expand our regular roster with a brand new artist.

Some time in early 2023 London based producer Silica aka Tom Banham got in touch with us saying he’d built a couple of tunes specifically with Kikuji in mind. Given the off-kilter and diverse nature of our outfit we were fairly confident it wouldn’t be possible for any producer, let alone a brand new one, to be able to put together something that synthesised whatever it is listeners might deem the Kikuij “aesthetic,” but without doubt Silica did it. Deep Sands is easily one of the most confident debut releases we’ve ever come across in the dubstep scene and is a distinctive shot in the album for a genre never more than 5bpm away from falling asleep at the wheel.

Across the EP Silica deftly fuses cinematic grandeur, tightly manicured drum patterns and the kind of surging warm basslines that seemed to disappear from dubstep almost overnight when everyone got into the unmitigated yawn-fest that became “stripped back 808 trap drums” to create a totally coherent record of 140 bpm bliss with a sense of cinematic grandeur and a distinct Eastern flavour.
